Question:

Purchasing alcohol underage at restaurants?

Im 20 years old, and do not currently have a fake ID. my problem is not getting alcohol, i can do that whenever i want, but rather getting it at restaurants.

What i mean is like if i was on a date with a girl, and we were at maybe a halfway decent restaurant. I would like to enjoy a glass of wine or two with my date over dinner just for atmosphere.

Do you think the waiter or whoever takes the drink orders would be very strict on carding me for trying to buy a bottle of wine? I figure if im at a restaurant and not some bar or whatever, they might think "hey, if this guy is here, and has the balls to order a bottle of wine, hes probably old enough" but i dont know. I just dont want to be embarassed by having them catch me in front of a date.

What would be a good way to do this? Just ask for it like i know what im talking about and have ordered it before? Or should i try slipping them a 20 on the side or something?

And dont just tell me not to drink underage

  1. You're an idiot. Wait the year and then get the girl drunk. But if you must get her drunk and impress her with fine wines, get the alcohol (which you obviously can get ahold of) and cook a dinner at home. That's much smarter and will impress her more. Plus it's healthier.

  2. The penalties for serving minors alcohol are the same whether you work in a bar or a restaurant.  So, you're just as likely to get carded in a restaurant if you don't look 25 or so.

I think it all comes down to how seriously the waiter takes the drinking age laws.  The waiter is the one who will be held responsible if they get caught serving it to you.  I think it all depends on whether or not the waiter seriously believes they're going to get into trouble for it.

Also, if you slip the waiter a twenty, it's telling him up front that you're underage- I wouldn't recommend that approach.  If it were me, I would just order the wine in a confident (and mature) manner.  The worst that can happen is they'll say 'no'.

  3. Just don't do it .. you've got a YEAR .. it's not a big deal ...

And yeah .. they will card you it's the law .. they can loose there ability to serve drinks if they got caught ,,

if you can get drinks anytime you want .. why run the risk of being embarrassed in front of a date ?

  4. You most likely will get carded.  I am 31 and still sometimes get carded.  At the grocery store with my husband, they refused to allow him to buy alcohol bec. I did not bring my license to the grocery store since HB drove.  I was 30 he was 31.  They thought he was buying for an underage drinker.  Wedding rings and all.  He had his license and was of age.

  5. not to drink underage

  6. They will card you, if they don't and got caught... they WILL LOSE their job.  And I've called the cops on kids before, an "of age" kid bought beers at the bar and brought them to the table and shared.  So don't be sneaky... you can get kicked out for even trying. :)

  7. Well, you shouldn't drink underage, but you're obviously not going to listen, so I shouldn't bother saying that.

If you know where you're going to go, go to that restaurant, sit down, have dinner, and order a glass of wine.  If he cards you, don't try again in front of your date.  If he brings it to you, that's good, but I wouldn't rely on just that.  Try going there a few more times and seeing how the waiters generally respond.  If they usually respond by bringing you a glass, you're good to go.  If not, don't order it while you're on a date.  Don't try slipping them money - a lot of people are easily offended if they think you're trying to bribe them, and they'll be even stricter on carding you.

Oh, and you probably shouldn't order a whole bottle.  They're much more likely to card you for ordering a bottle than for ordering a glass.

  8. they're defintely going to card you...i'd advise not to ask. i'm 26 and still get carded at restaurants!

  9. its the law to card they could lose their business license wait the year

  10. I've been to restaurant that card and some that don't. It also depends on who is serving you. Its really risky for them if they get caught. You could try...they might try to card you, but if you're willing to do it..then I guess try.

  11. they usually do card you. unless you're like 40 ha..

but if they ask just say

"****, i dont have my wallet.. brb.. i gotta go to my car"

and then when you get back just be like we decided we were just gona have a coke :] but thanks

    please help me out here

  12. I'm underage and have been served at a few restaurants. I'd say people card about 1/2 the time that I go out. (Weirdly, if I'm with friends, they card, but if I'm with my boyfriend who is the legal age, they usually don't.) If this is your first date with this girl, I definetely wouldn't try it in case it didn't work (you'll look really stupid, trust me, I've had this happen to a date before). As horrible as it sounds, you should try to get an ID that says you're of age if you still want to drink. DO NOT bribe the waiter. It's an insult, even if your intentions are only to get a glass of wine, and a waste of your money.

  13. No, I was a server for 5 years. It is THEIR job on the line. They are not going to risk getting fired over not carding you. If they didn't card you and you got pulled over and the officer smelled alcohol on your breath - the waiter could personally get fined as well as losing his job. The restaurant would also get fined. Even if you slipped me a $100 - it wouldn't be worth it - because of any legal consequences that could come of it.

Every now and then you might run into a server w/ a whatever attitude - but no ID no wine.

One time when I was working the service desk at a supermarket this young kid came up to me to buy a pack of cigarettes. He looked like he was 13 so of course i asked for ID and he didn't have any, and I told him that I was sorry but I couldn't sell any to him.
