I know that wireless routers allow for high speed internet networking withing a home.

But does it allow internet access in general without having to use other networking signals?

I have a small wireless router made into my computer but want a more dependable connection of my own.

  1. The purpose of a home router is mainly to allow a single internet connection to be shared among several devices. A wireless router has the same purpose but also allows capable devices to share this connection without wires, without being physically connected to the router / network.

So yes, a wireless router allows you to access the internet as you would without it.

I'm not sure what you mean by this: "I have a small wireless router made into my computer but want a more dependable connection of my own." I believe you mean you have a computer with a wireless adapter installed and want to be able to access the internet wirelessly. In this case you have to purchase a wireless router to be able to access your internet wirelessly throughout your household.

  2. In your computer you have a wireless ADAPTER.  This hardware allows you to connect to an available wireless network.

A wireless router can serve out an internet connection wirelessly, known as a wireless network.

You need a provider and (usually) a modem to get the broadband connection.  Then you hook up the wireless router to the modem to share this connection, wirelessly, to more than one computer.

  3. No, usually a router is just like a switch or wired router just with a wireless function so it can distribute signals in places where wires would be awkward. You will still need (unless you piggy back off someone elses connection) a cable modem or whatever your ISP uses to recieve the signal over their line.

  4. wireless router is nothing...its just a router....yes you have to connect the ethernet cable from your modem or if a direct DSL cable to your router and then your laptop can connect to

    wireless router...
