  1. Remedial education is the education that involves going back and filling in skill and knowledge gaps that should have occurred at an earlier age and grade.  All students have an education that resembles Swiss cheese.  There are big and small holes scattered throughout.  Some students have multiple and huge gaping holes that basically assure future failure unless remediated early.  The Preponderance  of Ignorance Theory states that each year the impact of such deficiencies gets larger exponentially, unless corrected.

Maintenance, in a similar way, refers to keep the skills that one has.  This requires ongoing use and practice.  For students with disabilities, particularly those with multiple severe disabilities, extended school year or summer school are therefore essential.

Remedial maintenance thus refers to the review and practice of skills that should have been previously mastered.  While the term remedial is rarely used in public education today, it is an important concept to apply in special education.
