can you help me find the purpose of hyperbole

A hyperbole is an exaggeration:

1. obvious and intentional exaggeration.

2. an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally, as “to wait an eternity.”

So it's purpose is to emphasize something.  In the example given above the waiting time is exaggerated to emphasize that the wait seemed very long.
