Question:

Purpose of moves in Taekwondo?

I need to know the purposes of each move and stand (up to third) Kup in Taekwondo, in English. Are there any good websites that will tell me this?

I already know the pattens but I need to know why each move is done, what their purpose is in attacking, or which attacks they defend against.

I know how to do them and what to all them in English and Korea, but this is from experience rather than from a set training manual so I may have missed some of the explanation.

  1. I would suggest that you buy the book:

Taekwon-Do (the Korean Art of Self-Defense)

    by Gen. Choi Hong Hi

or one of the other books written by the originator of the Taekwon-Do.

If you want to make sure that you get correct information, get it from the source!

  2. This is going to sound way too simple, but I'm not sure of your age so I'm going to give it a shot.

Up to 3rd Kup means you are 3 belts away from Black Belt.  So you know the TaeGuk forms up to Tae Guk Oh Chung.

That is 6 forms to cover and way too much to cover on Y/A.

But I assume that you know which moves are blocks, and which moves are strikes.  On the strikes, I assume you know the target areas, because you say you know the form.

The purpose of the blocks are to block the attack, you should be able to use deductive reasoning to figure out a mid block is to simulate blocking a punch, a high block to block a hammer fist, a low block to block a kick, the swallow form block is an open hand high block and chop at the same time, the spear fingers is to the solar plexus, etc.  The stances are for stability and power.

It's not that hard if you really think about it.

EDIT: YOU NEED TO DO THE WORK YOURSELF.  LIKE I SAID, IT'S NOT THAT DIFFICULT.  IF YOU KNOW THE MOVES, YOU KNOW THE ANSWER.  NO ONE IS GOING TO TYPE IT OUT FOR YOU TO CUT AND PASTE.

  3. Get a partner to work with. Yes you can get a maunal too, but the feeling of discovery will not be the same and the application of the technique may not stick. If you get somebody who has experience in your Dojang to work with you, and give you only subtle hints as you try to figure out the essence of the movements, you will be able to figure them out. Have them slowly come in for any attack and you use the movements laid out to avoid, trap, cut-off, and redirect the attacks coming at you. You might even surprise yourself and your instructor with the interpretations you can come up with on your own. This is the real way to studying the martial arts, and why it's a lifelong pursuit.

    Good luck in your endeavor!

EDIT- That's too bad, you're wanting to have it handed to you.
