I'd like to pursue a career in psychology or psychiatry, and I'd like to know any advice you might have for that. Which colleges have the best psych fields? What are the pros & cons of being a psychiatrist vs. a psychologist?

  1. Probably the most important thing to consider is whether or not you want to study medicine.  Psychiatrists are medical doctors who go on to specialize in psychiatry.  Therefore, they approach their patients from a medical model and are more likely to work with individuals who have biological disorders.  Pharmacology would be a major treatment mode for psychiatrists.  Psychologists, on the other hand are trained as scientists and clinical psychologists represent the applied branch of the field.  They put scientific knowledge into practice and are more likely to be involved with broader treatment modalities.  Psychiatrists make a whole lot more money if that matters.  Both involve extensive amounts of training and schooling.  Figure on 10-16 years, including your undergraduate degree.  Good luck!
