pushed out belly sign of asperger's or autism

my 1 yr old has been referred to a Pediatric Psychologist to look for possible signs of Asperger's.My sons Attorney says that one sign of either Asperger's or Autism is a belly like a starving Ethiopian.(please forgive me for being crass, this is what he said)

I can not find any links to any symptoms stating the portruding belly as a sign of either condition and wonder if anyone here would know of a link that describes this type of symptom. Thanks

  1. I don't know of an internet link, but do know that people with Asperger's and autism tend to have lots of food sensitivies, allergies, and possible missing enzymes that would make the food digest in a way that causes issues that will give a protruding stomach.

  2. i work with young children with austism--and I never heard of that-

    autism is a neurological disorder-

they may be a small number of children that have this problem--but that woudl be due to severe dietary issues--like refusing food

  3. that doctor is a quack. get another opinion.  1 year old is very early to dx asperger's.

  4. Children with autism and asperger's syndrome do sometimes have a stereotypical stance. Their stomachs are not swollen like starving children. Their stomachs are not bloated. The stance is due to low muscle tone and sensory issues. By sticking their stomachs forward and arching their backs the person has a more sturdy sense of balance, their center of gravity is more secure. Often times, young children with autism will also sit in a W  position to secure their balance as well. These positions are not exclusive to people with ASD but occurs in anyone with sensory issues.

  5. Never heard of this.  But I'm curious to know why your 1-year old has an attorney.
