  1. Well...hm. Puss is "kiss" in Swedish and "kalas" is party in Swedish, so a kissing party? Not that that makes much sense haha.

Maybe like a public display of affection or something similar sounds like that might be a better translation.

  2. All the previous answers are quite right. It a Swedish word alright, which you can´t find an accurate English translation for. It just means kissing a lot!

  3. Yeah, it means kissing party. If a magazine is showing a picture of two celebrities kissing they may write "so and so's pusskalas on the beach".

It doesn't actually refer to a party. It just means people are kissing...could also be used when a dog is l*****g someone's face. ;)

  4. It's definitely Swedish.

    Puss -- kiss

    kalas -- party

    So a kissing party?

Even though Norwegian and Swedish are very similar, neither part of the word is Norwegian; both are Swedish

    Med vennlig hilsen (that's Norwegian!)

    Louis

  5. Originally the word was used to describe a kind of celebration. Let's say you just found out that you got in to the university you always wanted to go to. When you tell your friends, they all tell you how great that is and they hug you and kiss you and dance around with you sharing your joy. THAT is an original "pusskalas". It can also occur when a group of people meet that haven't met in a while and everybody greets everybody else with hugs and kisses.

Later, gossip magazines have come to use it to describe any two celebrities who kiss, but that is not how it's used in every day speech. If you ask two people who are kissing if they are having a "pusskalas", it will sound almost sarcastic.

So, a "pusskalas" is a group of people celebrating something in a very natural way by hugging, screaming and jumping around. Mostly women for some reason.
