However, every child is different.  You can't expect children to learn things in a certain sequence.  Some children may have a hard time with learing their colors, but learn shapes very easily.  Every child learns and develops differently and at different rates.

  3. You don't teach things "in order" in preschool, but you expose them to all things all the time.

During circle time you can review these concepts.

In small group lessons, you can teach and review.

In centers, you can emphasize these concepts.

  5. This is the way I did it with my 2 children and my kids at school -- and it worked great!

Letters -- first the names and recognition of the letters, then their sounds (phonemic awareness)

Colors -- Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Black, Brown, White, Gray, Pink

Shapes-- basic shapes: circle, triangle, square, rectangle, diamond, oval, etc... (it helps to use color descriptors to learn these shapes)

and then finally numbers first the names and recognition of the number, then show them how many the number represents.

  6. The real answer?  There is no set order.  You teach the child when he is ready to learn things.

Letters will generally come last because there are so many of them and you have to distinguish between shapes to recognize letters and numbers.  Then again, there are so many shapes, both 2 dimensionsional and 3 dimensional, that it will take a long time to learn all the names of those.

The basic numbers, 0-9, will come before letters because there are less of them.  At the same time, that does not look at a real understanding of 1:1 correspondence and an understanding of place value that will help you to learn anything beyond 9.  It does not necessarily mean that the child has made the connection of numerals equating to an amount and what exactly that amount is, something they might not really understand until they have learned some letter sounds or even have moved on to spelling out words.

There are so many colors, but there are different shades of colors.  So you don't just stop at teaching them colors.

See why your question is not as simple as it first sounds?  There is no set thing to this.  You have to observe each child individually and introduce it individually when the opportunity presents itself.

  15. Definately note Matt's response.  I agree totally...there is no set way to teach the children these concepts...and really I find that they are taught simultaneously.  I begin exposing children to all of these from infancy.  When I note the child's interest in one or the other I take it from there.  We've had great success.  Good luck!
