The best way to put your dog to sleep aka death, is to feed it then take it for a walk, this is to give it a last time for happiness and make yourself feel good about doing what you have decided to do.  Then humanely shoot the dog in the back of the head with a large enough calibur that will distroy the dog's brain as quickly as possible but not leave too much of a mess.  Prepare a grave and bury according to you desires, and take solace in the fact that you had enouch courage and sense of responsibility to do it yourself instead of paying someone else to do it with lethal posion.  Some areas have a ban on this type of euthenasia because it takes money out of Vet's wallets, and some people are simply ignorant of proper and safe gun handling.  But just remember the money you save by diy euthenasia is money you can use for a nice doggy tombstone and wreath. I know that some people will feel that a do it yourself approch is wrong, but that is because you are just weak minded and have a uppity better than everybody else attitude. Just taking you dog to a vet to have it put down makes you similar to someone sending people to a gas chamber.  Be real, just take care of the situation and do it yourself with a 22cal.  Warning: just don't tell people you done it, they may be wimps.
