Putting a basement under a pre-existing home?

I have heard that this can be done. But, does anyone know about what it would cost to put in a full basement under a 1400 square foot home?

It depends on where you live, and when you plan on starting and finishing the project. It might be more cost effective to build another level on the home. Hope that helps!

I did that with my grandfather, it took 2 months with a crew of 8 men.  The cost at that time was $500.  That was in 1950.  The best way to determine the answers is to call a general contractor  and an engineer to design the work.  This is not a small DIY project and it does need a qualified professional crew to do the work.

Probably around $ 100k as a guess. It might even be a lot more, if the soil conditions are wrong. If you need the room, it would probably be cheaper to beef the foundation and add another floor.
