I asked this question a few days ago but unfortunately they didn't work out for me, when I put a dvd or cd into the coomputer nothing happens, I was advised to right click on the drive in My Computer and go to Autoplay but it doesn't appear in My Computer when I insert the disk, has this happened to anybody or does anybody know what I can do to fix it?

Thank you so much for your answers again!

  1. These are the exact things that caused it to malfunction,

    1. Mostly it easily gets attacked by a virus and your antivirus turn to heal/disable it thereby disabling it, this is the script name ( autorun.inf),

sometimes you can cause that too by,

    a. for example when you insert your pendrive or removable object or Cd and after finish using it and want to remove these removable devices, you don't close pendrive (eject)(safe to remove) or you don't close the application window of cd properties b4 removing object or Cd.

When you do this, without closing applications, some scripts in the autoplay function file will get corrupted and turn to be a virus script when machine is been scanned with antivirus it can delete the file or refuse to work at all because it did not close well previously.

2.this is the service/facility microsoft built to monitor autoplay function, go to control panel, open administrative tools, open services, scroll down, you find a section called ( shell hardware detection) make sure under status it is started, if not right click on it and start the application. You can stop the application and start it again.right click on the cd drive and click on properties, click autoplay (tab above), make show you click prompt me each time to choose and action.

restart the machine and this should work out for you.

If all these did not fix your prob meaning the file for that operation is not available, perform check disk,

click start menu, run, type chkdsk

    perform disk clean up,

Perform system restore to a previous date b4 the day it happened or you notice.

If you wish to secure the file back, upgrade your window to a service pack or boot through your cd and perform repair.

  2. To bring back autoplay on your dvd drive you need to use a free program called tweakUI. The details are here http://www.computeractive.co.uk/computer...

You should not need to do anything drastic like a systems recovery or a repair install.

  3. Are you sure the drive is working?  It doesn't sound like it is.

    CD-ROM Troubleshooting Tips

       1.  If the CD-ROM will boot from a recovery CD, then this would indicate a Windows software problem instead of a CD-ROM issue. It can usually be attributed to a corrupt driver. To reinstall the drivers:

          a. Go to Start>> Right click My Computer>> Properties>> Hardware>> Device Manager.

          b. Expand DVD/CD-ROM Drives line item.

          c. Right click on the items below and select Uninstall drive on the resulting menu.

          d. Re-boot the system and Windows will automatically detect the CD-ROM drive and re-install the drivers for you.

       2. Try a different media - some brands will just not work correctly with a given CD-ROM drive. Watch out for compatibility problems with Maxell, Memorex and Macromedia CDs.

       3. Check for unusual noises, maybe a ticking type noise. This could indicate a cracked disk. Or, the media may not be seated correctly on the spindle.

       4. Is the access light on?

       5. Is the CD Clean?

       6. Check error messages in Event Viewer. Here's how:

Go to Start>> Settings>> Control Panel>> Administrative Tools>> Computer Management (or Event Viewer)

       7. Check your manufacturer's web site for software updates and drive updates. Check for QSI firmware updates.

       8. For DVD - Are you trying to write to a DVD that is READ ONLY?

       9. If all has failed, you may be faced with performing a complete Operating System Recovery or Repair (preferred).

      10. If nothing above has worked for you, then you may need to take the drive in to a service facility for repair or replace the drive.

  4. Do you have a recovery cd, Place your XP CD into the tray, then go to Start>Run and type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes. That'll replace any missing or corrupt system files

  5. screwed up computer
