Putting in sand after the water - freshwater aquarium ?

Hey im getting a tank ready but havnt got the sand yet. is it okay to put the sand in after i put the water in? there wont be any fish in there as im doing a fishless cycle first. but will the sand settle okay?

  1. honestly i would put the sand in first because it wont cause as much as a mess, and then you can easily put your plants and decor in too. why are you using sand anyway? its not very common for freshwater fish, unless you have certain types of eels. most freshwater fish dont care for it too much, and if they happen to ingest it could cause alot of problems!!!


  2. Ya it should be fine. My boyfriend uses sand in his aquariums and he has done it this way before. It will take a few days for it to fully clear up and settle.  

  3. If you add sand after your tank is full of water turn off filter until sand settles, about a day. Sand will be sucked into filter and play havoc on you impeller. Also turn off filter when cleaning sand. Cause stirred up sand can also get into filter.

  4. the water might be cloudy the first couple of days.but youll be fine
