  1. 12- 6 in. steps with 40 in. treads

  2. 18 steps at a 4" rise, 2'3 on the run?

  3. The standard rise is 7".  Outside I like to go a little smaller for safety  So about a 6" with an 8" tread is about right for safety and comfort.  So this is your guide lines , not exact.  So to come out with  even steps you may need to adjust a little.  Or what divides evenly into 72"   6" divides into 72" for 12 steps.  All with a 6"rise.  Good luck,  Please remember me when you pick your best answer,  Thankyou

  4. You should make 10 risers  7-3/16" high and  10 treads or platform steps 4' wide x 4' deep .

Don't make your risers more than 8" tall . your treads need to be deep to make up the 40' length in 10 steps

  5. A normal step is about 7" in height, but you can have less.

Let's keep it simple with 6"

72" total rise divided by 6" is 12 steps, with the top step being the top deck and the bottom step support being the thickness of the step shorter than the other step supports.

Keep in mind that you subtract the thickness of the step from the bottom step rise so you don't have one step in the end that is a different height.

Use graph paper and lay it all out first.  Anticipate how much down you want the top deck surface to be from the door (too high and the door won't open, too low and it will be awkward to go in and out the door).

Think ahead as to how you are going to mount your handrails.  You can save considerable money by planning it all out in detail first.

OSHA requires handrails to be 42" high and able to support a 50 pound lateral push against the handrail without failing.
