Question:

Putting my boyfriend on my apartments lease?

My boyfriend and I have been living together for a while now but he has not been put on the lease at our apartment. I don't want to get in trouble by the complex as they require anyone living in the aparment to be on the lease, but my boyfriend has no credit and I have great credit. I'm worried that they will deny his application because he has no credit history. If he applies and it's denied, does that get me kicked out of my apartment? I think if his app is denied, they will probably catch on that he's still living here.....Any advice?

  1. Most places won't deny based on a short credit history.  The problem here is that you are in violation of your lease and could be evicted.  If your lease has a clause that says that 'only the person named on the lease is allowed to live there,' then they are within their rights to evict you.

Have your boyfriend put in an application.  If he doesn't qualify, he'll have to find a new place.  Simple as that.

  2. You already have the place, his credit check is a non-issue. They just need to know who lives there for there peace of mind so to say... Like if vandalism or harrassment, etc occurs in the complex/building, what have you, they just need to know who all is around.

They may not even add him to the lease, just might jot his name down just to have it on record. Sometimes they require license plate numbers as well.

Either way, it's no big deal, I've been there. Just call them, say he's staying there a bit, end of story.

  3. No credit is much better than bad credit. Most people are willing to take the chance with someone who has little to no credit.  Since your credit is good and they already have a relationship with you they will probably not worry too much about his credit. IF he was denied they have no right to kick you out of your apartment. You already have a signed lease with them. However, if he is denied and he continues to stay there they will probably be on the look out for him and if they know he is there that would be a lease violation which could eventually lead to termination of your lease. But if he has no credit you really shouldn't have a problem at all, that is of course assuming he works too. No credit and No job is a different story!

  4. You just need to have him added as an occupant. As long as you qualify for the apartment by yourself, his credit shouldn't be a factor.
