  1. 1 x 3 firring strips should be nailed and glued to the cement block.Do not attempt to had nail them, use a concrete nail gun.Shoot the nails into the mortar joints, not the block. You can space them every 24 inches.

  2. Yes, 1x3 firring strips are the answer.  They can be hand nailed into the mortar using cut masonry nails, but it isn't very pleasant.  You also have to space the strips to correspond with your starter strip, corner posts, and however you are going to finish your overhang.  I also space mine at 16 inches, although 24 should be ok if you are doing it yourself.  I have done this many times over the years.

  3. I've seen it done.  With the porousness of concrete blocks, they're ideal as a base for adhesives.  Get some 4/5 ply, 1/2" plywood,  cut it (lengthwise) into 1 1/2", or 2" strips.

glue these vertically to the blocks with Liquid-Nails (or similar) every 16".    The bottom piece should run horizontally, behind the starting strip, to avoid hollows where bees nests could form.

If you're using anything fancy on the outside corners, you might need to 'line-up' where to glue the nailers.

I recommend keeping the wood strips and siding at least 12" off the ground, to deter moisture-wicking and termites.

  4. well you dont want to hammer anything into the concrete block. If it were me  i would glue wooden strips on the concrete with a construction adhesive and then nail the siding to the strips. But i would never put siding on a conrete or block wall anyway.

Theres a lot of other ways to dress a wall up wthout going thru all that.

  5. The only thing that is coming to mind for me is some kind of adhesive....but that sounds like a temporary solution. Interested in seeing what others advise.
