Question:

Putting woes and the use of one handed putting...?

Putting had been the best part of my game. I would aptly be named the king of one putts to save par or to get bogey (I'm a 15 handicap).

Lately... 3 putts from short distances, horrible lag putts. I went from a blade to a mallet back to a blade and NOTHING worked.

Everything worked on the practice green, but on the course, it was the dreaded part of my game!

So I started working with one-handed putting and got a great feel for it that when I try putting with both hands, I'm really off.

What does the left hand do anyway (for right handed putters)? Slowly I've incorporated a really light grip with the left hand and used the right for control of everything and it seems to help. But the left hand seems to just get in the way.

Anyone experience this and how does one handed putting help?

  1. One thing that happens when people experience putting problem is they change their grip pressure during the stroke.  Most never realize they are doing this.  When was the last time you thought about your grip pressure during the putting stroke?  To cure this pay attention to your grip pressure before you start you stroke and be sure to feel the same pressure in the same places when you finish your stroke.

  2. Well I can't help you with why the left or right hand does in a swing but I can suggest a long putter they are so easy to putt with they are almost cheating they are great for lag putting but can be a little tricky on the short ones(not sure if this is because you are more up right or what)but to combat this I use two types of grips for putting one for long putts which is left hand on top  grip and right hand on the bottom grip with the left hand on my left side of my chest and the stroke is like throwing a ball under handed with the right hand and for short putts I hold the putter on the lower grip like a normal putter with the top grip against my sternum and make a normal putting stroke

and am deadly went from mister three putt to dead eye d**k one putt master

  3. The easiest way I can answer your questions is, that you have found a band-aid.  Band-aids temporarily help, but they fall off, and then you need another.  Make sense?

What you are saying about 1 handed putting is OK.  I feel that all golfers are either a right or a left handed putter.  This does not mean what side you address the ball, it refers to your grip.  If you are a right handed putter, you will want a little more grip pressure that the left, and vice versa.  Now, not all right handed players are right handed putters.  You can find out which "hand" you are by going to the putting green and hitting 10 balls with each hand.  You will see a noticeable difference in which is your better hand.

Take that info and apply it to your game.  Along with any lessons, you must practice.  this is not a band aid.

    Good luck

  4. amh92 is right but neglected to diagnose. The inability to make short putts in round is called the "yips." Ben Hogan once said that "If you had em', you got em'." There aren't many cures for the yips but when you look around the internet look for cures for "The Yips." Go to http://www.golflink.com/tipsvideos/categ...  there you will find articles and videos for your putting. The best way to do anything in golf really is to explore different ideas and find a comfort level. One handed putting, when you see the pros do it, is mostly used so that the golfer can feel the weight of the putter head and how it behaves. For me, my left hand keeps my putterhead aligned but then again so does my right, the best putts are stroked with the large muscles of your body not your forearms and wrists and hands all of that should just be static. The best piece of advice anyone ever gave me about golf is that you have to look at what you have and where you are going and never look at what you HAD. If you knew how to get back there you would still be there. Hope this helps you and good luck.
