My dog is being opperated on now, took her to the vet this morning for a check as had discharge, they took her straight in for tests, ultrascan unclear so now having a general for xrays then opp. Has anyone had this experience with a spayed dog? apparently sometimes a bit of the uterus is left inside and vets think this is what it is. Gutted!

  1. When our Family Lab was spayed, we were told from the Vet that since she is a large dog that sometimes they cant get everything out. So this can cause her to bleed from time to time when her normal cycle of heat would be.

It is actually something very common in larger dogs . Since you didn't state what side your dog is I don't know if this helps.

  2. Yes, it can happen, it's called stump pyometra, but it's not very common.   Good luck, I hope she's back home soon.

    "Prevention

Most dogs and cats that are ovariohysterectomized early in life will not develop pyometra. However, a uterine stump pyometra may occur after incomplete ovariohysterectomy which allows a segment of the uterine body or horn to become infected. However, either a portion of the ovarian tissue is still present or the animal has been subjected to progestational compounds to allow this situation to develop."

  3. Although this is rare it can happen if the vet who did the spay did not remove all the necessary organ parts.

I hope your dog recovers quickly!

  4. I have never seen a dog that was spayed with Pyo they have all been unspayed.  I hope she does great and recovers quickly, Good Luck!

  5. This should never have happened and is very poor practice. I would insist whichever vet spayed your dog covers your current vet fees.
