Im not that big of a Pyro fan, but I was expecting him to take first today! ((Over the horse I wanted to win, Visionaire))

But, I guess it just wasn't his day!

Your opinions?

Think he will still be the favorite on Derby day?

**Give me your top 5 list for the Derby**

1) Big Brown

2) Colonel John

3) Pyro

4) War Pass

5) Visionaire

Thats mine.

Thanks!

  1. Pyro has the earnings to get into the Derby. Ausmussen is not going to push Pyro for a race he does not need.

Interesting to see that Pyro was right in the mix  of the pack though.. I think this race could have been a learning race for him.

  2. why risk his chances of getting hurt today? he only ran as a tuneup today for the derby! i still like him to win the derby and on to the triple crown! PYRO, first with war pass/big brown in a dead heat for second, then visionaire and colonel john...goodracing shaping up! 3 weeks...

  3. I didn't expect Pyro to try too hard today.  He didn't need the earnings and didn't need to waste a lot of energy today.  Keeneland has been running to set up front runners lately... usually it's the other way around, but the races i've seen over the last week have favored horses who were in the front as they came around the turn.  Pyro likes to make his run after the turn in the stretch.  The other thing is the surface.  Pyro has never run over a synthetic track and I think todays race showed us that he didn't like it very much.  There's a huge Big Brown movement at the moment and I think he might be the favorite in the Derby, but I won't be jumping on him.  Asmussen said the only race that matters is the Derby... he has his priorities right... Pyro will be back on Derby day.  I think it's better that Pyro ran poorly today... he'll be a better price in the Derby and the favorite in the derby tends not to do very well historically which means that Pyro has a better chance statistically.  I'm still on the Pyro train and I really didn't expect a win out of him today.  Maybe not a 10th, but definately not a win.

I haven't really thought about narrowing down a list to a top 5 but I'll list the 5 I think of now... they might be a different 5 after post positions are drawn...

    Pyro

    Colonel John

    Z Fortune

and I dunno... I want to like Tale of Ekati but the Wood was kinda weak.  And Bob Black Jack has a ton of speed and surprised me last week when he showed he could really go the distance.  Big Brown will probably be up for a top 5 finish, but certainly not a win.

ps, Monba is a synthetic horse if ever there was one.  He and Coast Guard can run their own race on Derby day on a synthetic track somewhere.

  4. I too was shocked!! I will have to read the reports to see what happened.I thought Pyro,Cool Coal Man,Big Truck and Visionaire would all do much better than they did. My top 5 for the Kentucky Derby are Big Brown,Bob Black Jack,Colonel John,Tale of Ekati and War Pass.I am still in shock!!

  5. I listened to Jerry Bailey yesterday and still think that Pyro has a chance in the Derby top 3.  Not too sure if he can win in the competition that will be there though.  I still like Cool Coal Man and was dissappointed in his Blue Grass.

Tale of Ekati was impressive his last time out. So as undecided as I am right now, it is safe to say that my top five are:

    1.Colonel John

    2.Tale of Ekati

    3.Pyro

    4.War Pass

    5.ig Brown

  6. HE didnt like the track. Pyro likes Churchill and he will still be a threat. We will all forget this race in 3 weeks win he wins the Derby!!!

    Top 5:

    1. Pyro

    2. Big Brown

    3.Colonel John

    4.Tale of Ekati

    5.Monba

Big Brown has a bright future but he is sooo unexperienced so I am not for him in the Derby.

    STILL FOR PYRO!!!!!
