From a point 120 m from the base of a building, Sam measures the angle of elevation to the top of the building using her 1.5 m transit instrument. If the angle of elevation is 23o, how tall is the building?

  1. tan 23 = H / 120 m so

    H = 120 m tan 23 = 51 m


  2. jgoulden's answer is correct except for one thing - the transit instrument is 1.5 meters tall, so you need to add that 1.5 meters to his answer to get the total height.
