Question:

Q For Paramedics: Do you remove child restrained in car seat if child is unhurt or would you remove child?

I think in US they actually remove the whole car seat with child in it if they can to avoid further movement - just in case. What happens in UK? Do Paramedics take child out and transfer to perhaps Ambulance or not?

I'm asking because I have feasible idea for young children involved in car accidents.

  1. It depends on circumstances.

Sometimes it may be easier to unstrap the child than remove the seat it's in. If a para suspects the child may be injured, then it may be safer to take it out with the seat that may keept the child in a fixed position. But then, what if the release latches are not accessible?

Again, every single accident is unique and so must be approach of whatever professional rescuer is attending the scene. They must decide what's the best in under the circumstances.

  2. Generally we prefer to leave the child in the seat in case of injured and safety .but i have cut seat straps to removed child before because could not get seat out of the mess.

  3. Leave the child in the seat. Also if you leave him or her in the seat and you have other people in the car that are hurt, you would not have to worry about the child wandering around the scene. Been there done that.

  4. All depends on the severity of the car collision but they normally

get the roof off the car cut away the steering wheel to allow for

access for the paramedics to do their job.If there is suspicion

of neck or spine injury the passenger will be removed from

the car but kept in the seat to avoid any further injury until

they are taken to hospital to be checked over.

  5. Generally they prefer to leave the child in the seat in case he/she is injured and to them safely out of the vehicle as quickly as possible and it keeps them in a safe place during all the commotion.

  6. if possible the child is left in situ so the seat with child is removed as far as is practicable
