  1. Hi.  This is strictly a practice in the Roman Catholic Church only.  I am Catholic myself, but I can't tell you why or how this tradition started.

    It is NOT mandatory.  Some do this....some do not.  I found this little blurb on a website:

    "Some brides may consider honoring the role of the Virgin Mary as Christ's Mother, by presenting flowers at a side altar dedicated to Mary. (This is optional)."

    Again, I can't tell you who started this or why.

  3. It's a Catholic thing.  Mary is Jesus' mother and the mother of the Catholic church.  Brides pay homage to her motherhood by the giving of flowers and hope that she (Mary) will interceed with God regarding the bride becoming a mother.
