My husband is looking into joining the Reserves.........

So he and I are currently married by common law, for medical and a few other personal reasons. We absolutely love each other and are committed, have two kids, want more eventually.......and so on, but while we are spiritual, we are not religious people and so it has simply been more economical to just stay marreid by common law.

IF he joins the REserves, I am assuming his chances of going to war are fairly High, and so does he then gain the benefits of being fully enlisted?

What benefit is it to our family if we become married on paper before he goes for training? If he is only in the reserve, do they provide health insurance for myself or my children?

What other benefits would we have?

  1. YOu are not the only one who met this problem,I have met this type of  problem before.I have good experience here to solve my similiar problem.http://health-insurance.tips4free.info/h...

  2. it they are his kids then yes they will  get health inc no matter if you are married or not, but  you wont get anything unless you get married then you will get  money for food  and housing. but he only will get those things if he is deployed, then yes he gets every thing that a activate duty soldier gets ( fully enlisted). if you guy's have been together that long you should go ahead and just get married, it will make thing a lot essayer being in the military.

  3. Girl..If you love each other and are committed anyway get married!!!!

As his girlfriend, which is what they will call you, you have no rights at all to know anything, entitled to anything, ask anything etc..

I know everyone is going to tell me I am wrong, but really i am not. When my husband was getting deployed the first time, we were planning our big wedding. When he started to fill out paperwork and realized the Army would not even call me if something happened to him, we changed course and got married at the court house. As soon as we were married he was allowed  to allot stuff to me, list me as a contact, i got insurance and so on.

As for the kids they are his therefor, the army takes care of them. They can have insurance and all, but if you are not married you are not Army. They wont even talk to you.

i am sorry it is this way, I am not saying anything bad about the Army. My husband is on his 2nd tour, but you will get screwed as his girlfriend.

yup, you can get married quick, go to the court house. The license usually takes 72 hours to be processed though, at least where I live it does.

I still don't think they will call you, they usually call the mom or next of kin. They might, because you have his kids, if they are older.
