QB Big Ben helps Pittsburgh Steelers beat New York Jets 27-10 – NFL Recap
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger proved he is yet to come of age as he led the Pittsburgh Steelers impressively to inflict a 27-10 defeat on the visiting New York Jets in front of their home crowd on Sunday.
The Jets have far better offence with not just one but two star performers – Tim Tebow and Mark Sanchez – but Ben showed he, too, when in good form and shape, can perform like any other elite offence leader of the league.
Roethlisberger, also dubbed as Big Ben, completed 24 out of 31 passes measuring up to 275 yards, and while Jets’ prime attack line failed to find ground underneath their feet, the Steelers outclassed them almost in all other departments.
Ben’s close buddy wide receiver Mike Wallace was particularly all prideful for the quarterback, and said:
"Ben is one of the top in the game. I'll ride with him against anybody."
A particular point to note in the game was adaptability of Ben to new offensive scheme of coach Todd Haley. There was a general belief among pundits that it will be difficult for Ben, who is fast approaching maturity days of his career, to keep up with the
pace of the offence under the new offensive strategy but Ben’s performance proved them wrong.
Also, Steelers’ defence, who were without linebacker James Harrison and safety Troy Polamalu, hardly gave any room to Jets’ offence to penetrate through the line. Steelers’ both star players were out nursing respective injuries but their defence did not
allow the side miss their absence.
Jets on the other hand rued missing chances, which were rarely given by their opposition. QB Sanchez believes:
"I think us not converting on third down was a big hit today. We weren't our best. The throws weren't there at times. The catches weren't there at times, so we just need to be on the same page with that. It was a great effort by their team; we just came
up short."
In reality, the score difference does not lead to doubt if the Jets have lost the game for a few mistakes here and there - they were outplayed by the hosts at all fronts. While Jets defence failed to stop Ben, Wallace and other members of Steelers’ offensive
crop, their offence came out even worse.
It is baffling to see Jets with stars like Tebow and Sanchez ending the game with only 10 points on the board. Both QBs are high-profile attacking offence leaders and well capable of penetrating through any defensive line in the league, and yet their complete
failing is not understandable to many game analysts.
It nevertheless was well-fought game by the Steelers and thanks to the timely victory they have improved their rating in the American Football Conference (AFC) North division with one win out of two (1-1) games they have played. A similar position is held
by their division rivals the Baltimore Ravens, who lost their second game of the season to Philadelphia Eagles on the weekend.
