QB Brock Osweiler the future for Denver Broncos says VP John Elway - NFL News
Denver Broncos this offseason brought in one of the best quarterbacks to ever grace the league, Peyton Manning in free agency after the veteran was released by the Indianapolis Colts.
The Broncos brushed aside competition from many other franchises for Manning’s signature as he signed on a five-year $ 96 million deal.
However, the franchise is already looking ahead to a future when Manning will hang up his cleats and have prepared for that scenario by bringing in Arizona State’s quarterback, Brock Osweiler in the second round of this year’s drafts for Manning to mentor.
Osweiler’s pick was surprising for many fans who wanted a ready-made option at backup for the veteran player.
Speaking to fans through a conference call on Tuesday, Broncos vice president of football operations, John Elway explained his reasoning behind bringing in the young quarterback.
"It's always tough to pick a quarterback that you know is not going to play for you for a while. But I think we have high hopes for him in the future to where once Peyton decides to hang them up that he's the guy in waiting that can keep this (going) and
we don't miss a beat ... and we can continue to compete for world championships year in and year out."
The Broncos are looking to the long-term with Osweiler and the young quarterback will be trained and mentored by Manning to become his heir once he chooses to retire from the game.
Elway went on to add that Osweiler is not yet ready to start right away and this is the perfect opportunity for the youngster since there is no pressure on him to come in and perform.
"It's a perfect situation where there's not the pressure for him to come in and start right away. He's not ready for that.”
It remains to be seen for how long Manning can perform in the National Football League (NFL) after recovering from multiple neck surgeries but when he does end his career the Broncos will have a ready-made replacement on hand to lead the franchise for many
years to come.
In the present though Manning will lead out a new look Broncos side for the first time in the upcoming 2012-13 season.
