QB Colt McCoy escapes trade as Cleveland Browns cut Seneca Wallace – NFL News
Quarterback Colt McCoy has survived the scare of trade to another team by the Cleveland Browns as the team has released Seneca Wallace instead, leaving the backup position for the incumbent.
Wallace's waiver has come a day after coach Pat Shurmur expressed sheer disappointment over the poor showing by all three backup quarterbacks in the last preseason. They include another backup QB Thad Lewis.
Pat said then he had not made his mind what he was going to do, while all three quarterbacks expressed confidence about retaining the position on their ends.
McCoy, who has been a subject of discussions over the past few months around a possible trade after losing the starting job to rookie Brandon Weeden, has finally been assured another opportunity by the team.
With Wallace out now McCoy appears set to hit the No. 2 position, backing up Weeden, who has already been named as Browns’ offence leader for this season.
This has cleared the air around prospects of McCoy and also provided a sense of direction to the team. Weeden must be relieved given that McCoy despite being snubbed for the no 1 position had some hopes for competing for it again.
He nevertheless still has a chance to play on the starting line but purely in an injury scenario. Weeden who has made a rather shaky start to his pro career is on the risk of being bullied by some of rough defenders from the opposition teams and Browns will
have to increase protection around him to avoid any serious scare to the rookie. He just like any other young player, who lacks experience into early years of professional league career and purely relies on energy and force, remains prone to hits and injuries.
Although McCoy failed himself and the team on the starting line in the last preseason game, he still has a chance to prove himself. The game analysts agree that he is lucky to retain a spot in the Browns squad in spite of his failing during the last few
years.
