QB Drew Brees and New Orleans Saints restart negotiations on new long-term deal - NFL News
Small steps of progress are finally being made by the New Orleans Saints to resolve the contract issue between them and star quarterback, Drew Brees.
Brees wants a new long-term deal with the Saints and has till now refused to sign the franchise tender placed on him by the franchise.
The quarterback and Saints have been embroiled in a dispute over the monetary compensation to be paid in the new contract.
However, on Thursday, according to ESPN sources close to the talks said that the Saints general manager, Mickey Loomis had proposed a new contract with the quarterback’s representative, Tom Condon, and talks have been underway throughout the week.
This comes after months of silence on Brees’ contract from both the Saints and the quarterback.
The source also told the sports network that no significant breakthroughs have been made with the new round of negotiations as both Brees and the franchise remain approximately $ 2 million apart in their respective valuations.
Brees is reportedly targeting an average of $ 20.3 million per season and is playing hardball with the Saints because this latest deal could be the final major contract he receives.
Both parties have till July 16th to agree on a new contract failing which Brees will have to sign his $ 16.371 million franchise tag or hold-out of the Saints season altogether.
The 33-year-old is the face of the New Orleans Saints and a living legend amongst the team’s supporters.
Ever since his arrival in New Orleans in 2005 the quarterback has completely transformed the Saints from perennial National Football League (NFL) punching bags into Super Bowl contenders.
The quarterback in 2011-12 produced some of the best numbers of his career as he crushed legendary quarterback, Dan Marino’s three-decade old single season passing yards record, while also threw the most touchdown passes in the league.
He was the only one considered during the NFL Awards to contend with Green Bay Packers quarterback, Aaron Rodgers for the Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award.
In 2012-13 the Saints need Brees more than ever to lead the line as the franchise struggles with the impact of the bounty scandal punishments.
