QB Jake Locker, guard Steve Hutchinson Tennessee Titans' offensive captains – NFL News
The Tennessee Titans have named quarterback Jake Locker and guard Steve Hutchinson their offensive captains this season – an expected announcement following the selection of Locker as their offence starter earlier during training camp.
In addition, the team has announced that cornerback Jason McCourty and linebacker Colin McCarthy are the defensive captains while Tim Shaw will lead the special teams.
Jake has won the starting competition from former offence leader Matt Hasselbeck, who is expected to back him up on the number two position. He started games for the Titans in the preseason with a reasonable level of success and is expected to further improve
in the season.
Locker who had one rare opportunity in absence of Matt last season performed so remarkably well that a question about him being put through a competition for the leading role started emerging straightaway.
Coach Mike Munchak set the competition between Locker and Hasselbeck run through training camp and preseason last month before voting the youngster as the new offence leader of the team. He has complete backing from the coach for the starting role, and it is
to be seen now how well he comes up to the expectations.
The Titans are desperate for a win over the New England Patriots to settle the humiliating loss of 2009 and the performance of Locker and other players stands crucial to their chances. Their failing can repeat the history for the team, which is coming off
a good season.
Meanwhile, naming of the captains has coincided with an update on status of players’ recovery from different injuries. According to the latest information starting defensive tackle Sen'Derrick Marks after missing third straight workout activity on Friday
remains doubtful for the weekend game.
He is recovering from a sprained knee injury, which is expected to take some time to recover and he is unlikely to be fit for Patriots’ game.
Defensive end Scott Solomon returned to practice for the first time on Friday but still remains questionable for the forthcoming game. He had scoped his knee last week and is yet to regain hundred percent fitness.
