QB Matt Moore to be Miami Dolphins’ starter, Ryan Tannehill to be groomed for role-NFL News
The Miami Dolphins looked settled down with the choice of leaving rookie quarterback, Ryan Tannehill, to compete for the starting role.
He will have to challenge the incumbent Matt Moore and veteran, David Garrard, who is also a new addition to the squad, to claim the number one position.
According to Dolphins’ owner, Stephen Ross, Moore will continue to be the team’s starter into the 2012 National Football League (NFL) season, but he might be facing a competition from veteran Garrard anytime during the season.
Yet the owner said he was happy to leave Tannehill competing for the position. They will not thrust the role upon him until he shows readiness for it, he said.
"I don't think they're going to rush (Tannehill) into anything. He's going to have to win the starting job. I think Matt Moore will probably be the starter, and I wish him the best."
The owner seems to very firm in his statement about Moore being allowed to stay at the starting line as he also refused to rule him out of the role even in the longer run.
When asked about the anticipated timeline for Tannehill being placed on the starting line, Ross said:
"Whenever (Tannehill) is ready. And if Matt Moore develops, so be it. We want a franchise quarterback."
Dolphins’ general manager, Jeff Ireland, weighs Tannehill as a great prospect. Irrespective of the fact that the rookie lacks experience, his other qualities such as his arm strength, size and intelligence have impressed the GM.
Ireland said:
"I didn't take him with the eighth pick in the draft for him to be a backup quarterback. I picked him to be a starting quarterback in this league at some point to have an impact on the team and help us win games and championships. That's the expectation."
The player has also received backing from Dolphins’ new offensive coach, Mike Sherman, who happens to be the player’s head coach from the college league.
