QB Michael Vick to remain starter for Philadelphia Eagles, says head coach Andy Reid – NFL News
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid has confirmed that quarterback Michael Vick will remain their starter for the next game.
Reid confirmed the news in a statement issued on Wednesday, but he did not talk with the media as Wednesdays are off for Eagles.
It is expected that both Reid and Vick will talk to the media on Thursday.
The news is of prime importance, especially for Vick, who has not been able to play well this season. Although he led the team to a few victories at the start of the season, the quarterback has remained inconsistent while struggling with accuracy.
At present, Eagles are on a three-game losing streak and they have also lost lead in National Football Conference (NFC) East. Now they are placed behind the New York Giants, who are currently leading the division and have a solid advantage over the Eagles.
A couple of weeks earlier, after Eagles’ defeat against Detroit Lions, Reid fired Juan Castillo, who had been serving as defensive coordinator. As the Eagles headed to their bye after the defeat, it was assumed that Reid might introduce some more rash changes,
but that did not happen.
However, Eagles’ defeat against Atlanta Falcons after the bye prompted many observers to predict that Vick’s job might get threatened.
Even Vick said that he would accept any decision Reid made.
Eagles have a seemingly good backup quarterback in rookie Nick Foles, who had a brilliant offseason. However, the rookie is yet to test his abilities against veterans and that is where Vick has an edge.
A day earlier, Vick’s teammate wide receiver DeSean Jackson also defended the quarterback, saying that only one man must not be blamed for the team’s failures.
Jackson also said that Vick would remain starter and now confirmation from Reid shows that the management still has faith in Vick.
That being said, it must also be noted that the season is halfway through and if Eagles do not find their winning run now they might once again be left out of the playoff contention. Eagles will play their next game against New Orleans Saints, an opponent
from NFC South.
