QB Thad Lewis may start vs Pittsburgh Steelers as Brandon Weeden, Colt McCoy uncertain – NFL News
Cleveland Browns coach Pat Shurmur has backed third-string backup quarterback Thad Lewis as an offence starter in the final game of the season versus the Pittsburgh Steelers this Sunday (Dec. 30), although a final decision on QB Brandon Weeden and backup
QB Colt McCoy is expected after their training status on Friday.
Both players have injured their shoulders, respectively, and missed the practice throughout the week.  They were uncertain to play the next game until filing of this report, but if manage to show up at practice on Friday, their status can be changed and
they stand included in the squad.
Coach Pat Shurmur is expected give final update on them after practice on Friday and if they are absent the coach said Lewis has a fair chance to start in the final game of the season.
Pat said:
"He's got a live arm. He's very athletic. He'll execute our offense the right way and I'm glad he's going to, if he becomes the starter here, will have an opportunity. He'll do a good job."
Brandon was hurt in the last game versus the Denver Broncos. Colt McCoy then replaced him in the final quarter and got his shoulder injured. The choice of putting McCoy in the pocket has been criticised. The QB was risked suffering a serious injury because
he was given the role without any preparation, but coach Shurmur defended his decision, saying he did not have an alternative unless he could have stopped the game altogether.
Another key player out of the side and doubtful for the weekend is star running back Trent Richardson. He has suffered an ankle injury, which although is not a broken ankle, is of a serious nature. The team has to update on his status later on Saturday,
but apparently he is least likely to be able to be part of the squad in the season finale.
The Browns have already been eliminated from race to the playoffs and result of the game will not have an impact on their standings in the league. It can improve their record, though.
