QB competition: David Garrard leads Miami Dolphins depth chart at training camp – NFL News
The Miami Dolphins have provided the latest update about their starting quarterback competition and as per details the new signee veteran David Garrard is in the lead on the team’s depth chart at the end of first week of training camp.
David has beaten the incumbent Matt Moore and rookie Ryan Tannehill, who appears set to hit any of the backup positions at the No. 2 or No. 3.
Still, coach Joe Philbin said as the competition continues there is no guarantee David will be able to retain the lead until end of training camp.
He said:
"I believe we have talented players with good arm strength and good mobility with good leadership qualities. I couldn't be happier with the four men that are in that room. I told them the same thing, this is a starting point. Things could change. But this
is where we are today."
David agrees with the coach’s view that it is too early to claim or speculate he could be the next offence leader of the team.
He said:
"I just come out and go to work every day. Until I'm told anything, I'm just going to keep working. I haven't been told anything, I haven't been leaked anything, nobody has come to me. I'm just going to keep working and let it play out and hopefully my game
shows up."
The team is opening the preseason campaign with a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the coach hopes to know by then who their next starter is.
Now with the confirmation that David has emerged atop the QBs chart, the competition more or less remains between him and Moore, who too said to have impressed during initial couple of appearances on the starting line.
On the other hand, Tannehill, who has been rated to be a very talented player, is likely to get a backup position, most probably at No. 3 because of the lack of experience as a quarterback in the college league. He took a few private offence lessons just
before start of training camp but still it is too early for him to impress on the starting line.
