QBs coach Jim Caldwell new OC as Baltimore Ravens fire Cam Cameron – NFL News
The Baltimore Ravens in a surprise move on Monday (Dec. 10) sacked their offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, and head coach John Harbaugh admitted the decision was the hardest step he had taken but it was taken in the best interest of the team.
Although the team have lost two consecutive games, the move was not seen inevitable. However, Harbaugh said there was no other choice for him but to let Cameron go, although he called him his best friend and a good professional.
John said:
"My charge - our responsibility as a coaching staff - is to maximize the opportunities for our team to win, and we can still reach all of our goals for this season."
He added:
"The hardest thing I've ever had to do as a coach. There is a very human side to this. Cam is my friend, he taught me a lot about coaching, and he is an outstanding coach. It's not about fair or unfair, right or wrong. We need a change. Our plan and our
goals are to win games, win our division and get to the playoffs."
Harbaugh also announced that they had promoted quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell to take over the offensive coach’s role, and Caldwell also confirmed the move.
The former Indianapolis Colts head coach said although he had accepted the role willingly, there will not be a change in basic philosophy. Caldwell was sacked as a head coach by Colts owner Jim Irsay and he accepted to be a quarterbacks coach in a week after
his firing.
Since his arrival in Baltimore he spoke of having great plans for quarterback Joe Flacco, who seems to have completely been transformed this season. The QB has led the Ravens to many victories in the season under reign of Caldwell and boasted to have been
enjoying no-huddle offence.
Some commentators have seen Cam’s removal in line with the team’s ambitions to push for no-huddle offence. Although they do not see the outgoing coach a problem here, they consider Caldwell a right choice growing in a larger role. The Ravens have lost two
consecutive games at an edge of a playoff berth, and now it is expected that the shakeup might improve things for them.
