If you have a female would she lay eggs or do you need the male? I know they won't be fertile but could she still lay eggs? I want to know if my parrot is male or female but don't want to pay a vet to tell me. And how does the vet tell their s*x anyway?

  1. Yes, female quakers can lay eggs.  They are not fertilized but they still lay them.  If she is laying eggs she is a female.

  2. As others here have said, yes a female can lay infertile eggs without a male. However, not all females will do this.

AS to sexing the bird, there are many ways to try, but absolutely *None* of them is 100% sure except DNA testing at the Vet. If it is important for you to know the s*x of your Quaker, take it to the Vet.

Quakers are not a cheap pet to keep, at least not if you want to give your Quaker a good home. They need new toys( which they often destroy frighteningly quickly )regularly, good quality healthy food( not cheap bird seed ), large expensive cages( a Quaker can bite through the skinny bars of a cheap cage like cheese ), and quality medical care. If you love your Quaker and it's important to know it's s*x, then pay to have the DNA test performed. You should be able to get it done for $25 to $50, which is not a lot for Quaker care.

    Good luck.

  3. Female can lay with or without a male . But the is not to say they will. As for s*x do a home dna kit and send it off it is only about $20.00 to do it. And it is simple and easy to do.

  4. Yes, female birds can lay eggs with no male present.  A vet can do a very simple (but slightly expensive) s*x test using blood cells.  They either pull a blood feather or slightly overclip a toenail to get the blood.

Also there is a fecal s*x test that is supposed to be ALMOST as accurate as the blood test and just requires the p**p to be brought in.

I don't know the sexes of either of my parrots but having had them for 15 years with no eggs suggests to me that they are male.

I don't have a Quaker but have a small conure and a Senegal.  Quakers are unfortunately illegal here in NJ and that sucks because they are great birds.  Good luck.

  5. yes my female lays eggs every breeding season but will not accept a male at all. She will kill anything including me if I go any where near her food bowl she has laid them in lol she is a real tamed bird when she isn't laying eggs and sitting on them.

  6. I have a Quaker parrot and she was DNA sexed a female but she has never layed eggs. They sometimes lay eggs with or without a male present but not always. There is also a cheaper way to tell the s*x of your bird with out going to the vet. http://www.avianbiotech.com/

This website is great and I have used it. I am able to take an educated guess by feeling. Sometimes breeders use this method. To try pelvic sexing, turn your bird onto his back and feel for the bones right above his tail in the vent area. If there is a wide gap between these bones, your bird is probably a female. If not, the bird may be a male. However, the bird may also be a female that has never laid eggs.

Good luck any questions feel free to email me.
