  1. Could be up to 20 years old, one of them crashed at Bangkok a few years ago, nobody died though-at least I don't think so.

  2. It's very safe. Before the flight leaves, they identify airports that the aircraft could divert to if there is any doubt about having enough fuel to make it to the destination. On a Los Angeles-Sydney flight, for example, these airports might include Honolulu, Suva, Fiji and Auckland, New Zealand.

I flew in two of Qantas' 747-400ERs back in 2006. They were both fine aircraft.

  3. The 747-400ER (Extended range) was launched on November 28, 2000 following an order by Qantas for 6 aircraft. This was ultimately the only order for the passenger version. The -400ER can fly an additional 805 km or carry 6,800 kg more freight. Qantas received the first -400ER on October 31, 2002.

    .

  4. it is newish and of course it will be safe they wouldn't fly a un safe plane exspeshily if it is a big airline

  5. It's new. Came out in 1989, considered new for an aircraft. It has a pretty good safety record. Trust me, you'll survive.

  6. first, let me tell you that Qantas is the safest airline in the world,

second, the 747-400 has been in production for at least 20yrs, but dont be alarmed by that as air travel is still one of the safest modes of transport to date.

    see statistics below:

    Killed in car accidents 42,116*

Killed by the common flu 20,000*

    Killed by murders 15,517*

    Killed in airline crashes

    (of 477m passenger trips) 120 (1)

    Killed by lightning strikes 90*

    Killed by Anthrax 5

*Annual average over 19 year period*

Third, Longreach is only the little country town in North Queensland were Qantas first started flying out of in 1920.

The 747-400 series, meanwhile, which is the current flagship aircraft of the airline, operating the most important international routes, will be phased out beginning in 2013. The 747-400's will be replaced by the Airbus A380. Qantas is also considering the Airbus A350 to replace the 747-400's in addition to the A380; the Boeing 787 may also replace some routes.

contrary to news reports about airline safty, they only report about the few planes that have trouble and not the 1000s of sucsesfull flights each and every day!!

  7. you dont need to worry you city sh*t. just get on, go there, get off. ITS THAT EASY can you believe it?

  8. The long reach 747s are 747-400ERs.  All are new- the model only entered service after 2000.  They are excellent, safe, and comfortable airplanes- also faster than anything else you can buy a ticket on.

Qantas has also ordered a very large quantity (over 100 airplanes with options) of 787s and a few A380s.  These types will eventually replace the 747 on the long routes.

  9. All Qantas 747-400's are fairly new and very safe.  They updated the cabin on all the planes so everything is only a few years old and looks new.  They started flying the 747-400ER at the end of 2002, so those are all less than 6 years old.  The only visual difference is the registration, VH-OEE to OEJ (Wunala Dreaming paint scheme) and the blue paint on the main landing gear wheels.

Don't worry, Qantas has the best safety record.

    Edit April 23, 2008

All Qantas 747's have "Longreach" painted on them but not all "Longreach" 747's are ER's.

    Of the 30 747-400's, only 6 are ER's.

  10. The 747-400 is A very safe plane. Qantas is a HUGE company and would not operate an unsafe aircraft. If your nervous just think how many flights of 747's there are a day. Over 5000. (just the 747) None or very little incedint ever happens. Hope this helps.

  11. Not new.  Most were made in the late eighties and the nineties.

It's perfectly safe.  The most dangerous part about flying is the cab ride to the airport.
