Qatar Fencing Grand Prix: Epee World Cup Individual Results – Fencing Update
Russian fencer Anna Sivkova defeated the Italian teenager Rossella Fiamingo 15-11 in the Women’s Epee World Cup title match on February 13 in the Qatar Fencing World Cup 2011 at the Aspire Academy of Sports Excellence in Doha.
It was a hard fought exciting battle between the teenager and the much more experienced fencer.
Whereas, the U-23 European Champion, Fiamingo defeated Sweden’s World Youth Champion named Johanna Bergdahl in the semi-final round by a similar 15-11 win.
Shivkova was thrilled to win the individual title and was pleased of her performance. She had tough time to be in the finals and expressed it by saying that it was not easy to win from the Ukrainian Yana Shemyakina but she worked hard and got a solid 15-13
victory. On winning the title she said, “I’m extremely pleased with the result. It is the first time I’m participating here and to win is a great achievement. It’s a perfect start for me and the competition here was also tough.”
She admitted that her quarter-finals was very tough to combat against a Chinese fencer and stated that Sun Yujie was a competitive fencer and once she beat her Chinese opponent 10-8, her confidence had risen greatly.
After the medal ceremony she said, “More than the title it is the experience that I gained reach this far was important. I will try to keep up the good work in the tournaments ahead.”
A total of 129 women have participated from 24 countries in the individuals and the cash prize of the sum US $10,000 was distributed at the conclusion.
The Russian Sivkova got $5,000 followed by the runner-up grabbing $3,000. The third and fourth position namely Bergdahl and Semyakina received $1,000 each.
The concluding day for the Women Epee World Cup is February 14 after the team competitions get decided.
The winning team in this competition will receive US$4,000, for runner-up US$3,000 and the third positioned will receive US$2,000.
In the 2011 Grand Prix Men’s Fencing event, the previous day, Hungarian Geza Imre defeated the Italian Francesco Martinelli in the Epee individual’s final held in Aspire Academy on February 12.
The 37-year-old entertained the spectators well with his quick reflexes and was victorious 15-12.
The two-time Olympic gold medallist had made it to the finals after trouncing a fencer from Venezuela named Ruben Limardo with a tough fight of 15-13. It was an amazing match-up as both put in all they had for a victory.
Even though, Martinelli was expected to beat the Hungarian, but he failed to match Imre’s dynamic fencing skills.
Then Men’s epee squad competitions are also scheduled to take place on February 14 to conclude the Seventh Qatar Fencing Grand Prix 2011.
