Qatar Team’s Alex Carella happy after winning the 2011 UIM F1 H2O World Championship
A splendid performance from Italy’s Alex Carella of Qatar Team brought him on top of the 2011 UIM F1 H2O World Championship standings. The Italian driver earned 84 points after racing in seven events of the year 2011. His fellow team-mate, Jay Price from
USA, hit the second podium position with just a five-point difference at 79 points.
Price was leading the fleet from the start of the season and was on his way to lift the title but his run was interrupted by his team-mate, Carella, who nudged him down in two events, Russian Grand Prix in Kazan and UAE Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi to keep up
with the veteran.
In the final Grand Prix at Sharjah, Carella and Price could not cross the finish line in the first lap because both players were in a hurry to overtake each other to finish on top and in attempt to achieve the goal, they moved off the race track. However,
Carella was crowned as the champion on the basis of his overall performance in the season.
Speaking to the local media at the conclusion of the championship, Carella said, “It was a very fulfilling season and we had success when we needed too. Jay was an excellent teammate all season and it’s too bad it ended the way it did on the very first lap
in Sharjah.”
He added, “I was looking forward to going toe to toe with him for all 37 laps but I'll take the championship and am thankful to my whole team for making this a truly dream season for me.”
Overall the 2011 UIM F1 H2O World Championship featured 24 drivers from 13 different countries of Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The 10-month journey of World Title finished at Sharjah in December. The 2012 F1 H2O World Championship is going to start
in March at Doha with the Grand Prix of Qatar.
