Riding on the strength of an intense bowling attack, bolstered by Tharindu Kaushal’s 3-wicket haul, the Sri Lanka Under-19 claimed an 87-run win over the Qatar Under-19s at the Royal Selangor Club in Kuala Lumpur today on June 26, consequently securing a
spot in the semi-finals of the Asian Cricket Council Under-19s Asia Cup.
Owing to a rain delay, Sri Lanka U-19, who won the toss and chose to bat, were only able to play 26 overs, during which Pabasara Waduge (76) and Sebastian Perera (28) played key roles in getting their side up to 124. As per Duckworth-Lewis calculations,
the revised target for Qatar became 188 runs from 26 overs.
The Lankan bowling attack ripped through the opposing batting order without mercy. Openers Taha Muhammed and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Saad-Khan-c87741 were shoddy with their running, and both were sent back to the pavilion by Pulina Tharanga via run out – the former in the 3rd
over after contributing just 1 run, and the latter in the 9th over, after consuming an astonishing 24 deliveries to score just 4 runs.
A flurry of wickets fell cheaply in the first few overs – skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ishtiaq-c64579 (0) were both dismissed without putting up much of a fight. Nimantha Fernando claimed the skipper in the 6th over, while Ishtiaq was removed by
Ranitha Liyanarachchi in the 7th over.
Talal http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Narayanaswamy-Lokesh-c78632 (0) one after the other.
Mirza Mohammad (0) and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sekh-Jahangir-c89158 Ehsan (3) were also unable to rescue the team’s flagging innings, and although Ali Ishtiaq (24) and Uzair Amir (23) managed to establish a valiant 45-run 9th wicket partnership, their efforts came too late, as Qatar
finished at 100 – 87 runs short of the target.
Kaushal finished with figures of 3 for 29, while Tharanga, Liyanarachchi, and Fernando chipped in with supporting contributions, claiming one wicket each. Their performances propelled their team to the semi-finals of the tournament, and they will be facing
off against the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 Under-19s at the Kinrara Academy Oval in Kuala Lumpur on June 29.
