Qatar Women Epee World Cup 2011 concludes as China dominates to take title – Fencing Update
The Chinese team put in a tremendous performance as Xu Anqi beat Magdalena Piekarska in the last match-up to dominate the proceedings for a close 30-29 scored for the title on February 14 at Aspire Academy Hall in Doha.
Xu was brilliant with her performance as she managed to overpower the Polish fencer. With just four seconds left in the bout, Xu tied it up. Thus an additional minute was allowed by the officials in which Xu dominated for the win to take the Chinese team
to the title.
China has had difficulty beating Poland in previous encounters, however the day belonged to the Chinese team as they looked composed and dominated. Yin Mingfang, Luo Xiaojuan, Sun Yujie and Coach Li Ming celebrated the victory in earnest.
Xu was unable to open the score against Danuta Dmowska-Andrezejuk in the first match-up, but Sun Yujie took China ahead as she beat Piekarska 5-2.
Poland climbed back into the competition as Epeeist Malgorzata Bereza reduced the lead 4-5. However, Sun managed to defeat Danuta to help China climb up to a one point lead at 9-8.
As the score was level at 9-all after the exciting match-up between Bereza of Poland and Xu of China, Luo and Piekarska put in a tremendous effort to level it all up at 17.
The Chinese led 22-21 after Luo beat Danuta with a brilliant fencing display from both competitors. However, it was Xu who managed to carry the Chinese team to take the World Cup title beating Piekarska.
Xu commented on her team’s effort and said, “It feels truly thrilling to have played a big part in the title win.  But Sun, Yin and Luo also contributed a great deal. We are all thrilled with our combined effort.”
It was an exciting match-up as the Chinese Women showed their true potential and managed to dominate the proceedings against Poland to take a definitive victory for the World Cup title. Each member of the team put in a decent effort during their respective
matches.
