Qatar wants to host 2022 Olympics
It has been recently revealed that Qatar holds the intention of making the bid for the 2022 Olympic Games.
The Middle East nation is carrying out efforts that may help it to achieve this goal.
In 2010, Qatar became the first Arab World country to secure the bid to hold the Football World Cup on its ground. The result of the Football bid came as a surprise to many as it was widely speculated that the small nation would not be able to secure the
opportunity to play host to the World Cup.
However, the wealthy oil and gas nation proved its merit by getting hold of the bid and beating United States as well as Australia in the process.
Sheik Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, who is the secretary general of the Qatar Olympics Committee, expressed himself in the following words upon the matter of a possible Olympic bid, “The World Cup file is closed. We are thinking ahead and planning for
the future, bidding for Olympic Games and maybe other events. We've learnt from the previous bid. We wanted to show that we are a strong, reliable partner. We are in love with sports and we want to work together to bring the Olympics to Doha and share our
passion with the region.”
It is not the first time that Qatar is aspiring to bring sports to the region. It has been some time now that the Arab country is projecting its image as a sporting nation. In the year 2006, the capital of Qatar, Doha played host to the Asian Games. Not
only that, Doha also welcomed quite a few annual tennis championships in which many international stars took part.
This time around, the Olympics Games are being staged in London next year. However, it will not be the first time that the capital of England will have played host to the Olympic Games.
The first time that the Games took place in London was more than a century ago in 1908. The next time that the Games made their way back to the city was in 1948.
