Qing Xu claims Men’s 100m freestyle gold – 2012 Paralympic Games
Qing Xu of China claimed gold medal of the Men’s 100m freestyle in S6 category on concluding day of the swimming events at the 2012 London Paralympic Games in Aquatics Centre on Saturday, September 8.
Xu dictated terms to his opponents in the double lap freestyle event as he smothered efforts of his challengers and reached the finishing end for gold medal.
With his commendable form, Xu remained considerably ahead of his toughest competitor and tapped the finishing wall for the title with a timing of 1 minute and 05.82 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Sebastian Iwanow of Germany, who remained almost one and a half body length behind and touched the wall for silver medal with a timing of 1 minute and 07.34 seconds.
The second position holder was followed by Lorenzo Perez Escalona of Cuba, who stayed nearly 0.70 seconds slower and stepped on the victory stand for bronze medal by submitting a time of 1 minute and 08.01 seconds.
Escalona was chased by Darragh McDonald of Ireland, who stayed 0.91 seconds behind and settled on the finishing blockade as fourth best finisher by producing a time of 1 minute and 08.92 seconds.
Fifth fastest spot of the event was obtained by Matthew Haanappel of Australia, who stayed full body length behind and touched the wall with a timing of 1 minute and 09.88 seconds.
Haanappel was traced by Anders Olsson of Sweden, who remained just 0.24 seconds behind and completed his race in sixth best place by producing a time of 1 minute and 10.12 seconds.
Subsequently, Olsson remained 1.09 seconds ahead of Matthew Whorwood of Great Britain, who managed to prove his eligibility for seventh spot of the event by submitting a time of 1 minute and 11.21 seconds.
Whorwood was followed by Adriano de Lima of Brazil, who failed to surpass any of his opponents and ended eighth in the race by reporting a time of 1 minute and 11.32 seconds.
In addition, Xu expressed happiness over his victory in the event and said that he would try hard to continue the same in upcoming events.
