Qiu Bo seizes Men’s 10m Platform gold: Day six – 18th FINA Diving World Cup
The two-time world champion, Qiu Bo of China excelled in the Men’s 10m Platform playoff by seizing gold medal of the event on sixth day of the 18th Federation Internationale de Natation Amateur (FINA) Visa Diving World Cup at the Aquatics Centre,
Olympic Park in London, on Saturday, February 25.
The 19-year-old Bo, who made his way into the final as the top contender for gold medal, smothered all struggles of his opponents by sustaining his position in the playoff. With his stupendous performance, Bo faced no trouble in claiming the crown of the
event and stood on the medal rostrum for gold medal.
Bo is the gold medallist of 10m Platform and Synchronised 10m Platform at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai. Previously, he captured gold medals in the disciplines of 3m Springboard and 10m Platform at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games. He was also the
silver medallist of individual 10m event at the 2009 Rome World Championships.
The Chinese expert dominated all six rounds of the event and earned his way to the top of medal rostrum for the title by accomplishing a total of 574.90 points. With his scintillating form, he remained significantly ahead of Russia’s Victor Minibaev, who
cemented his place on the victory stand for second position.
Minibaev stayed almost 51 points behind the gold medallist and followed him on the podium for silver medal by achieving a nice score of 523.60 points. The second position holder was chased by Peter Waterfield of Great Britain, who elevated from the tenth
best qualification spot, and proved his eligibility for bronze medal by obtaining a score of 510.35 points.
On the other hand, the arena was bewildered with the deteriorating performance of Bo’s teammate, Lin Yue, who remained the second best diver of the event until the semi-final, but failed to sustain his position in the playoff and finished sixth with an effort
of 493.00 points.
Men’s 10m Platform is the only event so far, where China has not succeeded in making a clean sweep. Nevertheless, it would be interesting to see, how Chinese divers perform in the remaining events.
