I heard in line skates may give some problems to leg. Opinion about this is my intention.

  1. I think quads are better for a 5 year old, save in line for after she masters quads. In lines go faster and are more difficult to start with when you're learning how to roller skate. If she already knows how to skate fairly well and likes in line better, go with in line.

  2. For a 5 year old skater who has never skated before, you should be looking for Fisher Price quad skates, the kind with the wheels you can partially lock.

I you can only buy regular skates (not the Fisher Price ones), make sure that you can tighten down the wheels until they barely roll. She may have to push against them, but they also won't roll out from under her.

Either way, I would recommend quads. Roller blades are meant for the road, not for the rink. They are designed like skis, not skates. And while easier to use at first, are limiting as the child gets to be a better skater. If you MUST get inline skates, look for hockey ones. They don't have some of the bad features of a roller blade style of skate.
