Quaid-e-Azam Trophy gets underway today under a new format
Pakistan's premier domestic four-day tournament, the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, that kicks off today, Saturday 23rd of October is set to have a number of changes in its format.
The event will play a total of twenty two teams, divided into two divisions – Division One and Division Two. Division one would include twelve teams - the top six regional teams and departmental sides based on the results of 2009-10

At the conclusion of the league phase, the bottom placed regional and departmental teams would be relegated to the Division two for next year.
Three departmental and seven regional sides would make up the Division Two. The three departmental sides include Pakistan Television, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 (SBP). Pakistan Television team will be participating
in the tournament for the first time while State Bank of Pakistan has returned to the first-class circuit of Pakistan after almost three decades – 27 years. The best departmental side will make it to the Division One in next year's tournament while the one
that would finish at the bottom would not be able to play next season.
Although both division one and two will conclude with finals but it would have no effect on promotion or relegation of teams.
Named after the founder of Pakistan, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the Trophy was initiated in 1953 to help single out the team for Pakistan's Test tour to England in the next year. The tournament has been played occasionally between regional teams, at times between
departments, and sometimes among a mixture of the two.
The inaugural edition of the Trophy featured seven regional teams. However, in 1956-57, it was decided that http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Punjab-c833 and Karachi would have to enter three sides each, so as to make the teams more equally matched. By winning the tournament 19 times, Karachi
teams lead the trophy.
