Sixteen best-of-nine matches were played on the third day of the qualifiers. All matches went as per expectations except the upsets of Steve Davis and Tony Drago.
Steve Davis, six-time world champion and one of the greatest snooker players ever, has been eliminated from the China Open as he lost to the Thai-Poon, James Wattana, after a fully stretched battle by a frame score of 5-4. It was a tough competition between
the two, but Steve couldn’t capitalise the given chances and has been sent home.
Another upset was of Tony ‘The Boss’ Drago as he lost to another Thai player, Issara Kachaiwong, by a frame score of 5-2. Drago, after winning a scrappy first frame, made a mind-boggling magnificent break of 137 in the second frame and was leading Issara
by two-frames-to-nil. He looked very confident and people were expecting a one-man show from him, but he lost the next five in a row. There were no reasonable breaks made by the underdog, but an excellent safety play from threw the highly experienced Maltese
Falcon out of the qualifiers.
There was another legend lined up on Day 3, Jimmy White, who has now successfully gone through to Round 4 after beating Peter Lines by a frame score of 5-3.
The matches to be played in the qualifiers for Round 4 are:
Stephen Lee                     vs.          Alfie Burden
Ryan Day                         vs.          Tom Ford
Matthew Stevens              vs.          Anthony Hamilton
