I've been checking out Benjamin Sheridan, RWS, Medoza, Beeman, even Crossman, and a few others and noticed that the prices have gone through the roof. since spring. Is that normal summer price adjustments or permanent for other reasons?

  1. Probabely permanent considering the high demand for metals of all kinds.

  2. There is something close to a perfect storm here.

The costs of materials is up.

The costs of delivery is up.

During the summer season everyone wants a gun to plink with, so demand is up.

There was an economic stimulus that hit right as people started looking to buy toys for summer.

There was a tax return that combined with economic stimulus to give a lot of buying power. Even the pawn shops are riding a wave (and workers there getting a bit irritating in their cocky tudes even, because everyone wants what they have, but it's going to drop them on their back sides soon : )

People are looking to lower cost alternatives to guns because of high fuel costs and high everything else costs, so they will spend some on a nice substitute, a nice quality air rifle. Note that it's not the cream or the c**p that's rising to the top, it's the middle quality stuff that claims high performance. A Focus on more bang for the buck.

You mentioned Mendoza, which was relatively unknown and selling dirt cheap this spring, but they started up building for RWS who implemented much stronger quality standards to put their name on those particular guns. What you could get for $80 with a coupon will now cost you a good $165. That often happens with an introduction of a good quality but unknown product, even in cars.

The dollar is down a good 17% since 2006 at this time, so that builds in that disparity pretty automatically into anything done or made outside the US.

That is about the size of it. There is a bubble, and look for the popping about the time people start to focus on hunting season, which is a few weeks, to a month and a few weeks away.

I'd wait if you can. In a couple of months those now riding highest  will be begging you to buy their product, again.

  3. its just because of today's messed up economy and probly wont be permanent
