Question:

Quality canned cat food under $1/can?

I am hoping someone can tell me of a quality cat food that is under $1/can. I have read so much on cat food ingredients and cats' nutritional needs that I have thoroughly confused myself, and all of the "best" brands like Blue Buffalo and Nature's Variety are apparently very pricey. I was feeding my cat Authority for a short time, and while the ingredients looked OK to me and my cat loved it and seemed to be getting a gorgeous coat from it, the research I've done shows that Authority is garbage, I guess.

I am hoping there is an "in between" brand that is better than, say, Authority or Nutro, but less expensive than $1/can brands. I love my cat, but I simply cannot afford a food that is quite that expensive. I will be looking into making my own cat food in the future, but right now I don't have the freezer room, so that too is out.

Any suggestions? THANKS!

  1. get u're cats to switch to dry food, canned food is a lot of water. dry food in the end is cheaper. cats get spoiled on canned food can be hard to switch. my cats get canned food only as a treat.

  2. Everyone has a different opinion about dry and wet food.  My opinion is dry food is fine.  I have two bowls in different places, one has Friskies Feline Favorites and the other has either Purina One or Fancy Feast Gourmet.  As long as you keep fresh water available, their water intake should be fine as long as they are healthy and the vet hasn't told you any different.  I have recently weaned my cats off of wet food because it can cause dental problems in the long run, and it is full of fatty fillers.  But, if you are looking for a reasonable wet food to give them as "treats" every few days - Fancy Feast Wet Food or even Friskies is a good middle-of-the-road food.  You really don't have to use expensive food, most of it is the same.  If you want to save even more money, call the 800/866/888 number on the food you decide on or want to try before committing to one particular brand - and ask them for a sample, or a coupon and ask about the nutrition-content in the food you are wanting to try.

  3. Most High quality canned foods are under a dollar per 5.5 oz. can.

Look into Wellness. It's a really good brand.

  4. I think Natural Balance costs less than a dollar. It's a very good quality cat food. You can find it at Petco.

But I think you've already made a good choice. Authority canned contains no corn, no wheat gluten, and no soy all of which are very bad for cats. Feed what you can afford. Authority is an "in between" brand, it's not as good as Nature's Variety but it's also not as bad as Friskies. Friskies has the most horrible ingredients.

And you are completely right, dry food isn't good for them!!! Here's a great article that explains why cats need canned food.

  5. Dry food is NOT good for cats contrary to what alot of people and vets think.

Unfortunatly thereisn't top quality canned unerf a dollar. Fancy feast which iss a mile grain cat food is about 50 cents, THe good thing is that the first ingrdiant is a muscle meat. The bad, is they contain alot of grains. Stay away from the gravy flavored too.

Wellness, about 1.25 a can is top quality as it contains no grains. If you have multiple cats you can buy the biggest cans and it reall wouldn't cist much more then fsncy feast. You can also call them each month and they will send you 10 dollar off coupons

on't listen to the c**p about ry foods, Stay away for your cat's health

  6. Canned food is not all that bad for your cat as long as you give a little at a time. Always give cats dry food or as I call them, crunchies. Grocery stores carry a large selection of wet cat foods. I buy my cat Sheba, Fancy Feast, Meow Mix in the cups and pouches, Friskies and 9 Lives. They are all fortified with vitamins and minerals that cats need. Quality of these foods are good too.
