Quality of a small portable sewing machine?

I have been thinking of buying one of those small portable sewing machines that run from $20-50 just for small jobs like making pajama shorts. I don't have the money or space to buy a large one. Do they really work that well or are they just a waste of money?

They are a complete waste of time and money.  For a usable beginner's machine that does straight stitch, zigzag, buttonholes and blind hemming, check with your local dealer for a pre-loved one.
