Question:

Quantity Surveyor?

My boyfriend is training to be a quantity surveyor, partly with a company in Croydon and they are paying for his uni course which is one day a week at five years. He's thinking of leaving because he's not happy with the pay. How much do you think he should be being paid (bearing in mind his company are paying for his training!) and does anyone know what kind of salary he should expect once he's fully trained?? thanks

  1. I'm a chartered surveyor but on the commercial side. I did 4 years at uni and then I spent two years after I had graduated working for a company in London and working towards my professional qualification (the APC). While I was training, my salary didn't go over £26,000, despite me working in the middle of London. I qualified three years ago and I'm now earning in excess of £50,000 per year, as well as a hefty bonus, company car, pension and healthcare scheme. If you're boyfriend is earning around £25,000 then I'd say that's good for where he is in his career. Don't forget that his company are paying for his course fees, tuition fees, and professional fees which can add up to around £6,000 per year. Once he's qualified he should see his earnings increase really quickly - tell him that its not worth dropping out at this stage, he just needs to get is head down, work hard and he'll reap the rewards in a few years.
