Quantum Racing down in 2011 Region of Sardinia Trophy but still leads Audi MedCup Circuit standings
America’s TP52 sailing team, Quantum Racing performed consistently in the first two regattas of 2011 Audi MedCup Circuit, as they clinched first place in Cascais Trophy and second in Marseille Trophy.
But their sail in the third regatta, 2011 Sardinia Region Trophy, has not been convincing, as they tumbled down to number five after nine races.
On Day 1 of the Sardinia Trophy at the Gulf of Cagliari, the American team was shaken by the Cagliari style weather conditions and they finished last. The team stepped up in the next races and despite
harsh conditions prevailing at the race site, they made it back to second place in the event. However, that's the best Quantum could do as another Mistral that hit the site in the last two days forced the team down to number five.
Their performance in the Sardinia Region Trophy might have disappointed them but they are still on top of the Audi MedCup Circuit standings with 91 points. Quantum Racing will be taking part in the
next Audi MedCup regatta, 2011 Region of Murcia Trophy, starting on August 23. To stay on top of the standings, Quantum Racing must display a strong sail in the trophy.
Speaking to the media after the event ended, Quantum Racing project manager Ed Reynolds said, “Over the years I don’t think we have had a breakdown, or done circles (penalty turns) and we end up with
both on the same day. We came in and tacked too close to Synergy, it was not a cheap foul, it was one of those things.”
He added, “You load these boats up so hard and although we check these things meticulously, it was the top terminal where it goes around the eye went. The guys sorted it really quickly. It is the
first time we have had a major breakdown in the Audi MedCup Circuit.”
